From the very beginning, when I poured boiling water into the beaker I heard cracking sounds, and noticed more and more striations all over the beaker over time. After 3 months, the grooves have become deeper and now it's leaking. I don't think the plastic used for this product can withstand boiling water!

I just checked other reviews and noticed someone with the same problem, attributing the cracks to the metal holder which must be replaced (bodum stated when contacted) for use with a plastic beaker.

After breaking several glass beakers over ten years I thought: plastic will be a life time solution. True -- if you don't live long. Ditto what so many reviews have said about the scratches. Cosmetically that doesn't bother me -- BUT it also cracked across the bottom and leaks consistently and continually. Many suggest that boiling water is the culprit. Perhaps that contributes, but for what it's worth, I don't put boiling water in the beaker. A press makes better coffee if you let it cool off just a bit. So, glass v plastic, hmmm? 50 years ago my parents had a poster in our home (which today is variously attributed to Socrates, a Zen saying, a Hebrew saying, perhaps others): "There is no solution, seek it lovingly." I guess that's my answer.

I bought this item not even 3 months ago. The plastic has developed deep cracks and the coffee has begun to seep out. One reviewer says it comes from the metal fitting scratching the sides. Although this might have seeded the cracks, you can hear the plastic cracking when you pour hot water in. (hot, not boiling, water). Basically, I think the plastic doesn't withstand high temperatures. Given that this is supposed to be a french press, it's a poor choice of material and renders it unusable.
