This is a large and expensive humidifier and had good reviews, so I thought I had found a good unit to replace the Holmes HM5602 that had served me well for two years. (I think two years is a long time for for a warm mist humidifier that gets used 12-14 hours a day for 8 months at a time. It actually still worked, but I hadn't kept up on the cleaning schedule like I should have so it was encrused with lime deposits and I felt it was time for a replacement.) I realized after I bought the Enviracare that the description doesn't give you a square foot or room size coverage estimate, just says that it will run for 24 hours on one fill. Well, that is for sure! The output is so low even when it's turned up to the maximum setting that it would probably run for 48 hours. I tried it with and without the included hard water absorption pads but it didn't seem to make a difference. It might help in a very small bedroom if you ran it 24/7 and kept the door closed, but but for anything else I feel it's useless. I bought from the manufacturerer and I have to say they have excellent customer service; the first unit arrived broken and they shipped me another without even making me return the broken one. They might even replace it again, but I just don't want the hassle. I think the design is poor anway; the hot water reservoir/heating unit is a 2 1/4 inch circular cup that's only 1 1/2 inches deep. It's no wonder it can't - literally - build up enough steam to do any good. Luckily, even though the HM5602 is no longer in production, I was able to find it online and bought two.

Every year I buy a new humidifier, except this year. This year is the first time I used the same humidifier as last year.
You can check my reviews for other humidifiers, I've reviewed one or two others, and this is by far the best.
I had an ultrasonic humidifier, and it left a white dust all over everything, that I later learned gets into your lungs - you can imagine how fast I stopped using that humidifier. Also, the rubber gaskets that kept the water tanks full dried up over the summer and it was almost impossible to close the water tanks the next year.
I had a "wicking" humidifier, but why introduce something into your house that grows mold? The pads are expensive & have to be replaced regularly as the get moldy, even if you rinse them & use the special water additive. Why bother?
This humidifier is great. The two generous tanks last more than a full 24 hours. Each night when I replace the tanks, there's always some water left over in one of them (one empties earlier than the other - that's just physics, one tank will be minutely lower than the other & empty first).
There is a boiling water sound, which I've gotten used to. The built in hygrometer doesn't seem to do much - it's either on or off. The boiling water help heat the room, which is good since I primarily use it in the cold, dry winter months (cold air can't hold that much water, so there's little water in the outside air to transfer the warm indoor air). If I leave the bedroom door closed, it gets quite toasty in there at times.
A crust forms in the basin - that's all the stuff that's not going in to the air (that would be if you used an ultrasonic humidifier). Mine is mostly rust colored and is made up, presumably, of rust - we live in an old building. This is annoying to clean out every few days, but relative to other humidifiers, clean up here isn't so bad.
There's small round cotton discs that protect the heating element, and you'll want to stock up on those. Luckily they're amazingly cheap and come like 5 or 10 to a pack.
So let's review.
- No expensive pads like a wicking humidifier, just cheap pads.
- No risk of mold, which is a constant battle with a wicking humidifier.
- No white dust that gets into your lungs like an ultrasonic humidifier.
- Survived the summer to be used in the next year, I expect it to survive another year to be used next year too - YAY!
- Two large tanks last 24 hours.
- Boiling water sound, could be a negative if you're a sensitive sleeper.
- Warm water warms the room, which helps in the winter.
- Must be cleaned thoroughly every few days, which is annoying, but doable. Just be sure to keep water out of the fan.
- A UV lamp (which I haven't had to replace yet) claims to kill germs - this may or may not be true. Eventually you're supposed to replace the bulb, but I haven't had to yet.

My wife and I have used one of these for about 2 months now. I had a bad cough that lasted 5 weeks and a friend told me to get one. It not only cured my cough but is very easy to use and reliable. We have had it in our bedroom at night and the humidity went from 36% to about 83% in about an hour. We actually had to lower it a bit. Its easy to fill the two containers and I like the idea of leaving it running while filling up the water. It's easy to clean and use. Thumbs up.
